Deaf Sports and Recreation aims to facilitate and promote the equal participation of Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in Sports and Recreation at all levels in Queensland.

About Us

We are  an incorporated charity organisation. We are the only peak organisation whose main aim is to promote sport and recreation for the Deaf community. We advocate for equal opportunity for all Deaf and Hard of Hearing people of all ages in Queensland. DSRQ endeavours to partner Deaf sporting clubs with wider community sports and recreation organisations. DSRQ is a member of the Deaf Sports Australia and Sports Federation Queensland.

Mission Statement

The Deaf Sports & Recreation Queensland exists to provide and advocate for equal opportunity for all Queensland Deaf and Hard of Hearing people to participate fully in sports, recreation and community activities that enhance their quality lifestyle and encourage personal development.

What We Do

DSRQ is the only specialist Deaf sports and recreation service in Queensland, and provides tailored services to both Deaf and wider community. All our services are provided to Deaf members in Australian sign language (Auslan). Auslan is a first language of most Deaf people. Services we provide are: 

  • Support to our affiliated clubs in association management, planning and financial management
  • Advocacy for equal access and participation in mainstream sports, recreation and social activities
  • Co-ordinate annual events
  • Provide Deaf Sports Awareness Training in sports and recreation to any interested organisations ie school, club, State organisations
  • Manage the Junior Development Program and identify elite junior Deaf athletes
  • Produce and disseminate the newsletter to subscribers

Local Community Involvement

The DSRQ board of management is comprised of 8 community members, many of whom are Deaf athletes or coaches. Our members and stakeholders include:

  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing people
  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing juniors and young people
  • Deaf people with multiple disability (eg: mobility)
  • Children who have Deaf parents
  • Deaf service providers
  • Deaf sports and recreation organisations
  • Regional Deaf clubs
  • Government departments
  • Sports and Recreation peak bodies
  • Mainstream sports clubs
